Who issues electrical permits in Florida
Florida licenses electrical contractors at the state level through the Electrical Contractors’ Licensing Board of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), in two forms. A certified electrical contractor holds a geographically unlimited certificate and may contract anywhere in the state (Fla. Stat. § 489.505); a registered electrical contractor may contract only in the jurisdiction its registration is issued for (§§ 489.505, 489.513). Permits are local: state law leaves a county or municipality its power to regulate contractors’ work through a system of permits, fees and inspections, and the official who issues a permit must confirm the contractor is certified or registered and meets any local requirements where the work is done (§ 489.537). An electrical permit comes from the county or municipal building department with jurisdiction over the address.
